Hiring Student Interns & Graduate Assistants:
General Guidelines for Academic Internships:
The work performed must be in the students' major - for example, a Human Resources major must be performing HR-related activities, such as in the Human Resources Office. The internship must be completed under the supervision of a trained professional in the field. For example, the HR student above should be receiving training and guidance from a staff person with an HR background. The student must perform work that is challenging, meaningful, and related to their coursework. Clerical and administrative tasks typically do not qualify.

General Guidelines for Hiring a Graduate Assistant:
A Graduate Assistantship (GA) is for students admitted to a graduate degree program.
Payment: The compensation for a GA typically involves a waiver of the student's matriculation fees and a stipend per semester. The compensation you offer may depend on your budget. (As an example, some departments have, each semester, waived 9 hours of in-state matriculation fees and provided a $1,000 stipend for 15 hours of work each week). The compensation paperwork that you complete will depend on how the position is funded by your department. You may want to consult with your Dean on the process for arranging the matriculation fee waiver. In order to set up the stipend, you will need to complete an "OPS Personnel/Payroll Action Form" which can be found on the marlin share drive under "Form/HR Forms/OPS Appointment Form New for Banner".
Interview Process: As with other on-campus jobs, interested candidates will be contacting your department directly to apply for the position. The interviewing and selection process are left to the discretion of the hiring department. If the student has never worked on campus before, he/she will have to complete new employee sign-on paperwork. For details, contact HR at 590-1400.
