The Application Process:
The application procedures and deadlines can vary from institution to institution. We recommend that you create a timeline/checklist for each school you are applying to in order to keep yourself organized and on track. Remember, start the entire process a year and a half before you wish to enroll.
1. Include the following steps in your timeline -
- Obtain and submit application materials from the institution – it’s good to get the applications in early
- Look into the availability of test prep classes
- Sign up and take required standardized tests (GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, GRE, etc.)
- Create your personal statement/application essay. (Contact the Career Center if you would like assistance in writing your personal statement.) Some schools require applicants to submit a personal statement to assess your interest and motivation in the program and the field, and to assess your ability to write clearly and correctly.
2. Often statements may include -
- How you became interested in the field.
- Your career goals.
- Obstacles/hardships you have overcome.
- Personal qualities/skills that would enhance your prospects for success in the program.
- Why you want to attend that particular school.
3. Obtain letters of recommendation -
- Know the format to follow – some schools use a form, others ask for individualized letters.
- Give your professor or employer at least two weeks to write them. It’s also a good idea to give them a copy of your personal statement, resume, and a brief description of the program you are applying for.
4. Create/refine your resume or portfolio.
5. Order/send transcripts if necessary.
6. Obtain and apply for financial assistance, if desired.
Final note: The graduate/professional school admittance process can be very competitive. Are you prepared for the possibility that you may not get any acceptance offers? Do you have a contingency plan?
