Job Preparation:

The FGCU Career Center is here to assist you with any and all job preparation needs. We know the job search can be a challenging process, and is one that requires more than just surfing the Internet for jobs and sending out resumes. Remember that before you actively engage in a job search, it is very important to have a completed well-written resume, a strong cover letter template, a letter of references, and have prepared for the interview process. The most effective and efficient job searches are those that have a particular goal in mind.  What do you want to do or what industry do you want to work in?  If you don’t know the answer, consider meeting with an FGCU career advisor to clarify your goals.

Getting Started -
  • Network, Network, Network! Networking is the #1 way in which most people find their jobs. All the positions advertised in newspapers, journals and on-campus job postings represent only 25-40% of job openings available.  This means that 60-75% of jobs lie in the hidden job market.  The way to penetrate the hidden job market is through networking.  Although you can find a job in the advertised job market, it often takes a lot longer, and you are much more likely to experience high competition and numerous rejections when you focus only on posted job announcements.  Remember the old saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”  Join networking groups, such as the FGCU Alumni Association, professional or trade organizations, local chambers of commerce, charities, or young professional organizations.

  • Register with College Central Network, the FGCU Career Center’s web-based job listings system.  The site enables you to search jobs, post your resume, and sign-up for interviews with scheduled recruiters. Visit the site at http://www.collegecentral.com/fgcu/

  • Attend Career Fairs, which provide a great opportunity for people to job search with a large number of employers in one spot. Check out our events for dates and locations of campus, local, and statewide events.

  • Check out other web based job-listing services, such as EmployFlorida.com, NaceLink.com, Monster.com or Career Builder.com or through the local newspapers.
Things to Remember -
  • Don't forget about Social Networking when searching for a job.  Facebook is a great way to connect with your friends and colleagues and pursue different job opportunities.  To look at an example professional Facebook profile Click Here [pdf], this shows ways to make your profile "job seeker" friendly.
  • The job search process can take anywhere from 3 – 6 months.  Start early and plan your time accordingly.
