What is the Florida Gulf Coast University Counseling Services Center?

The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a unit within the Division of Student Affairs.  Our services are designed to provide accessible and quality counseling, therapy, consultation and referral, instruction, education, and assessment for the university community. Our services are based on acceptance, understanding, respect and care for all who seek services.

Who is eligible for counseling services?

Our services are provided free for those students currently enrolled in the academic session during which the counseling takes place.  A minimal fee may be required only for assessment inventories used in the counseling process.  Individuals from the community in general may receive career counseling services only for a separate fee.

 Who provides services at CAPS?

The staff is comprised of full-time and part-time professional counselors and therapists.

Services are provided by licensed psychologists, licensed counselors, registered mental health counselors as well as graduate interns under the supervision of licensed, professional staff.

A psychiatrist is available for consultation.

How do I make arrangements to see a counselor?

You may call CAPS at 590-7950 or email caps@fgcu.edu for information, but appointments can only be scheduled through a personal visit to our office in the Wellness Center.  When you make the appointment in person, you will be asked to fill out preliminary paperwork, so an appropriate amount of time for doing so will need to be allotted at that time.

Walk-in clients will be seen for assessment on an emergency situations.

Are counseling sessions confidential?

All information about you including acknowledgement of your visits is confidential and cannot be released without your written permission, except in specific instances, e.g. life threatening situations.

What types of services are provided?

  1. Individual counseling (both personal and career)
  2. Group counseling (determined by student need)
  3. Crisis intervention
  4. Consultation

Can I get personal and career counseling at the same time?

Although these are not usually mutually exclusive, you may obtain either personal or career counseling.  It is possible to begin one and incorporate the other into your counseling process.
