The Summer Residential enrichment program for CROP and Scholars high school students was held June 12-17, 2011, in Washington, D.C. and sponsored by The Close Up Foundation. Forty students, along with Cathy Doyle, Susan Genson, Darlyn Scott, and Ashley Coone traveled to Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon. For some students, it was their first time on an airplane! Using Washington, D.C. as a living classroom, the Close Up Program helps students experience government “close up” and make a personal connection between history and their own roles as participants in the U. S. democracy. The students learned how a bill is created and adopted, toured Capitol Hill, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian Museums along with other sites of interest. Students also met with Congressman Tom Rooney, Senator Marco Rubio and an aide from Congressman Connie Mack’s office. Students participated in educational sessions each day with their Close Up teachers. All expenses were covered by the FGCU Outreach Programs and Close Up Foundation scholarships.
